Accounting and tax for content creators

Bookkeeping and tax for YouTubers, streamers, podcasters, and influencers.

Ashmore Books does monthly accounting, cleanup, tax planning, and tax preparation for U.S. content creators: YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, Kick, Patreon, Substack, podcasts, OnlyFans, and creator-led product brands. We reconcile every platform payout, brand deal, and affiliate payment to real records, and we prepare the return from the same books.

What Ashmore Books does for creators

Direct answers to the questions creators ask an accountant.

Track income from every platform

YouTube AdSense, TikTok Creator Rewards, Instagram bonuses, Twitch and Kick payouts, Patreon, Substack, Ko-fi, Spotify and podcast ad networks, affiliate programs, and direct brand deals are each recorded and reconciled to platform statements, not just to what hit the bank.

Reconcile 1099-NEC and 1099-K forms

Platforms and payment processors (PayPal, Stripe, Venmo) issue 1099s that often overlap or include refunds and fees. We tie every 1099 to your books so nothing is reported twice and nothing is missed.

Separate brand deals from product sales

Sponsorship and UGC income is service revenue; merch and digital products are sales, often with sales tax. We keep them separate so the tax return and any sales tax filings are correct.

Deduct the right creator expenses

Cameras, lighting, microphones, editing software, home studio space, contractors and editors, travel for shoots, and props are recorded with the documentation the IRS expects.

Plan quarterly estimated taxes

Creator income is uneven and there is no employer withholding. We project the year and set quarterly estimates so April is not a surprise.

Decide when an S-Corp makes sense

Once net creator income is consistently high, an S-Corporation with a reasonable salary can reduce self-employment tax. We model it with your actual numbers and handle the payroll coordination.

Clean up a year of Stripe and PayPal dumps

If the books are a pile of unreconciled platform deposits, or there are no books at all, we rebuild them from platform reports, bank statements, and 1099s.

Prepare the return

Form 1040 with Schedule C for sole proprietors, Form 1120-S for creator S-Corps, and Form 1065 for creator partnerships, prepared by an Enrolled Agent-led team from books that are already reconciled.

Why creators come to us

Platform reports and bank deposits rarely match. We make them match.

Most creator bookkeeping goes wrong in the same place: the platform reports gross earnings, the bank shows net payouts after fees and holds, and the 1099 shows a third number. Ashmore reconciles all three so your Profit and Loss is right, your Balance Sheet holds together, and the tax return is built on real figures.

FAQ

Questions creators ask

Short, factual answers about creator accounting and tax. Rules depend on your facts; these are general explanations, not tax advice for your situation.

Do content creators need a bookkeeper?

If you earn money from YouTube, TikTok, Twitch, Patreon, sponsorships, or affiliate links, you are running a business and the IRS treats it that way. A bookkeeper keeps platform income, 1099s, and expenses reconciled so your tax return is correct and you do not overpay or underreport.

What can content creators deduct on taxes?

Ordinary and necessary business expenses: cameras, lighting, microphones, computers, editing software, subscriptions, a home studio or office space used for the business, editors and contractors, travel for shoots, props and supplies, and a portion of phone and internet. Records and business purpose matter, which is what proper bookkeeping provides.

How do creators pay quarterly estimated taxes?

Creator income has no withholding, so federal (and usually state) estimated taxes are due four times a year. Ashmore projects your income during the year and tells you the amount for each quarter, then adjusts as income changes.

Should a YouTuber or influencer form an S-Corp?

Often yes once net income is consistently high, because an S-Corp lets you pay yourself a reasonable salary and take the rest as distributions not subject to self-employment tax. It also adds payroll and a separate return, so it is a numbers decision. Ashmore models it with your actual figures before recommending it.

My 1099-K from PayPal or Stripe is higher than what I actually earned. What do I do?

A 1099-K reports gross payments, including refunds, fees, and sometimes personal transfers. The books have to show the gross figure and then the fees, refunds, and non-income items separately so the return matches the 1099 without overstating income. This reconciliation is standard in our creator bookkeeping.

Can Ashmore Books rebuild my books if I never kept any?

Yes. Platform earnings reports, bank and card statements, PayPal and Stripe exports, and prior 1099s are enough to reconstruct the books, even for several years, and then prepare or amend the returns.

Which platforms and tools do you work with?

QuickBooks Online and Xero for the books, plus YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, Kick, Patreon, Substack, Ko-fi, Spotify, PayPal, Stripe, Shopify, Amazon, Gusto, and most brand-deal and affiliate platforms.
